Jordan Lyles, 33, a right-handed pitcher for the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball (MLB), started the team’s road game against the Detroit Tigers on April 20, but was unable to get another win. Despite posting a quality start (six innings of three runs or fewer on six hits), he gave up five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning after his team led 4-1 and eventually lost 4-6.
In 15 starts so far in the 2023 season, Riles is winless with 11 losses and a 6.72 ERA. A 0-24 record is mathematically possible. He’s had some bad luck with poor offensive support, but compared to last year, it’s hard to tell if he’s the same pitcher. When he was with the Baltimore Orioles in 2022, Liles was a reliable starter for the team. He logged his second-most innings (179) since debuting with the Houston Astros in 2011, and went a career-high 12-1 with a 4.42 ERA. The Royals took notice and signed him to a two-year, $17 million deal ahead of this season.
Last year, Liles threw his fastball (31.8%), sweeper (24%), sinker (17.5%), and curve (13.4%) in that order. This year, he throws more fastballs (36.4%) and fewer sweepers (23.8%) and sinkers (11.4%). His fastball average velocity is similar to last year (147.7 mph) and this year (146.7 mph), but as his pitches and pitching patterns have been analyzed, his runs have increased. This year, they have given up the most runs (69) and earned runs (64) in all of MLB. Not surprisingly, they also have the distinction of having the highest ERA among starters.메이저사이트
As MLB.com notes, “The Royals have not won a single game in the 15 games Riles has started since the start of the season. That hasn’t happened in the live ball era since 1920.” The Royals are currently in last place in the American League Central (20-54, .270 winning percentage).
