Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Bae Ji-hwan congratulated his alma mater’s juniors on winning the Cheongryonggi High School Baseball Championship.

Gyeongbuk State won its eighth Cheongryonggi title in more than 30 years, since 1993. Gyeongbuk defeated Gunsan Sangho in the 1993 Cheongryonggi final when Doosan manager Lee Seung-yeop was a high school sophomore. Lee won the best pitcher award as a high school student at the time.

Bae Ji-hwan, who is undergoing rehabilitation after suffering an ankle injury during a game against the Milwaukee Brewers on July 2, said on July 2, “I am personally very happy to hear that my alma mater, Kyungpook National University, won the championship in a foreign land, and I am very happy and proud of the juniors who achieved a tremendous title of winning the Cheongryonggi after 30 years.”

Bae Ji-hwan said, “I would like to congratulate the juniors once again on their victory and thank them for spreading the good news far and wide. It’s been more than five years since I graduated from Kyungpook National University, but this year, if I have the chance, I hope to meet with my alma mater’s coach and players after the season.”

Meanwhile, Bae appeared in 76 games before his injury, batting .214 (8-for-51) with two home runs, 19 RBIs, 37 runs scored and 20 stolen bases.
